Global thermal imaging market is valued at US$ 7,800.0 Mn in 2018 and is expected to grow at a CAGR of 8.2% to reach US$ 15,850.0 Mn in 2027. Night vision technology has been widely used by the military in surveillance and other security purposes. However, there was a need for a device which could detect objects and anomalies in extreme weather conditions. Thermal imaging devices were first used in the 1960’s by the United States military to see at night without the use of illuminators or search lights. This technology has been widely adopted hence by various security firms in spite of its high cost.

Among thermal imaging devices thermal cameras are one of the most prominent product. These type of cameras consists of sensors also known as detectors which are sensitive to thermal infra-red (IR) radiations. These detectors or sensors are further categorised into cooled sensors and uncooled sensors. Currently thermal cameras have resolutions ranging from 160 X 128 to 640 X 480 pixel. In nature, all living beings radiate heat energy which is invisible to naked human eye. Thermal imaging devices such as thermal cameras consists of sensors/ detectors which senses these radiations and develop a picture of the object in camera. More the heat energy is radiated by an object, the brighter it appears in camera picture. Thermal cameras help in identifying objects in total darkness or during thick smoke. In addition to identifying objects, thermal imaging can be used to detect temperature differences in surrounding areas thus increasing the global thermal imaging market size.

Thermal imaging devices including thermal cameras are used in multiple applications including military,  protection and maintenance of commercial, residential and industrial buildings. By Type Outlook

By Type, the global thermal imaging market is segmented into hand held devices and mounted devices. Thermal hand held devices requires one hand to position and operate leaving the other hand to perform other tasks. Hand held devices can be easily transferred from one user to another. Fire service people generally use handheld models. Mounted thermal devices were introduced in the early 1990’s but were not operational till mid 2000’s. Mounted thermal devices are used generally for research, science wherein continuous infrared radiation data can be observed and monitored. Mounted devices are now being widely used by security personnel as well. Mounted devices segmented is expected to grow the fastest over the forecast period.

By Technology:

By Technology, the global thermal imaging market is segmented into cooled and uncooled systems. Cooled thermal imaging systems including cameras have a imaging sensor which is integrated with a cryocooler. A cryocooler helps in reducing a sensor’s temperature which is required to reduce thermally induced noise. Cooled thermal imaging devices are very sensitive to small difference in temperature. Cooled thermal devices are more expensive than uncooled thermal devices. Uncooled infrared device doesn’t require cryogenic cooling. Uncooled sensors work best in longwave infrared band from 7 to 14 microns. Uncooled devices have fewer moving parts as compared to cooled devices. In addition, Uncooled devices can work continuously for years, whereas cooled devices require maintenance every 2 years.  Cooled devices is forecasted to grow the fastest over the forecast period.

End-User Outlook

Based on the end-user, the global thermal imaging market is segmented into buildings, healthcare, military and others. Buildings is further segmented into residential, commercial and industrial. In all types of buildings, especially building where large number of employees gather, thermal cameras are extensively being used for screening of COVID-19 infected persons. Thermal imaging devices are used widely in industrial setup; wherein any irregularities can be found out thereby reducing the risk of loss of life, maintenance costs etc. Firms are able to increase their revenue by efficiently inspecting the buildings. Thermal imaging devices are widely adopted in the military space; especially the aviation sector. With the help of thermal imaging devices, fighter jets can identify enemy targets even during complete darkness and other extreme conditions.
